Destiny
Sanchez, Caela’s Friend and A.I. Dupont Roommate, read by
Natalie Corbin
"Dear Friend..."
Introduction
My name is Natalie Corbin and I will be
reading remarks written by Destiny Sanchez, Caela’s friend. Destiny was a teenager when she and Caela met at AI DuPont
Hospital for Children during the summer of 2002. Since then, Caela and Destiny have been roommates in the
hospital several times and kept in touch in between admissions.
Even though they were so far apart in age, Caela and Destiny
shared an undeniable connection. Destiny has struggled with her own difficult illness since
the age of 9, and is now waiting for a quadruple organ transplant.

Olga Lucia Torres, Family Friend
Hi, my name is Olga Lucia. My connection to the Farmer family is that
Mari-Carmen and I have been friends for over 14 years now. I have to
admit that I was surprised when Mari-Carmen and Tatum asked me to say a
few words today, but I felt incredibly honored.
Caela and I had something in common – we both had serious neurological
and medical conditions that required round-the-clock attention and care.
Unlike Caela’s neurological condition, I suffered a traumatic brain
injury (Mari, FYI, “TBI”) in August of 2000. The doctors’
predicted that I would die the day I went into the coma, but clearly,
they were wrong. Currently, I am still in therapy and recovering from
the brain injury. I share this information w/you b/c I hope that
you’ll be able to see how Caela helped me save myself from my own
self-pity and self-loathing.

Danielle
Modica, Caela’s Friend and Speech Therapist
"An
Angel in our Midst"
For
those of you who may not know me, my name is Danielle.
Mari-Carmen and I started out as acquaintances--friends of a
mutual friend. This was
before Caela was conceived--then she came on the scene and our
relationship turned into a professional affiliation as I would have the
honor of becoming Caela’s speech therapist and now ultimately our bond
has blossomed into a very dear and sacred friendship.
Anybody
who knows me understands that Caela has changed my life.
This is not something that can be explained with words or defined
by labels, it is simply a fact…an absolute truth that my course in
this world was undoubtedly altered upon the moment I first set eyes on
her. And I feel incredibly
blessed, undeservingly fortunate and fully humbled to share a rare and
pure connection with this wonderfully beautiful, awe-inspiring little
girl.

Raspberry
Kisses
Her eyes said it all
Words need not get in the way
With a blink of her lashes in your heart she’d stay
Eyes of patience with no need to say
For silence was broken when her eyes came to play.
There was no denying the expression in her stare
A Shakespearean soliloquy could not even compare
For the emotion delivered from her soul to her stare
Was never of burden, just of love to share.
She personalized her look for the one in her sights,
Always of sound mind, despite her fight,
When I think of the words she never did speak,
I remember those kisses she raspberried on my cheek.
Baby girl, I love you
And I’m happy you’re free
I’ll continue your Rett fight
Until I see
You face to face
And when I do
I’ll still take your raspberries as my “I love you.”
